Xatt l-Aħmar Beach

Xatt l-Aħmar is a quiet and scenic bay on Gozo’s southern coast, located below the village of Għajnsielem. Its name means “Red Shore,” referring to the warm reddish tones found in parts of the surrounding landscape. Sheltered beneath rugged limestone hills, the bay offers clear water, a rocky and pebbly shoreline, and beautiful views across the channel towards Comino and Malta.

The beach is especially popular with local swimmers, snorkellers and divers looking for a peaceful alternative to Gozo’s busier coastal spots. Beneath the surface, rocky formations and abundant marine life make the area rewarding to explore. Xatt l-Aħmar is also one of Gozo’s best-known diving locations, with several wrecks resting offshore, including the former Gozo Channel ferry Xlendi.

🐠 Diving: Xatt l-Aħmar is a major shore-diving location, known for its underwater scenery and nearby shipwrecks. Diving to the wrecks should only be attempted with the appropriate qualifications, equipment and local guidance.

👟 Wear Suitable Shoes: The beach consists mainly of rocks and pebbles, so water shoes or sturdy footwear will make entering the sea more comfortable.

🎒 Bring Your Supplies: Facilities are limited, so take drinking water, sun protection and food with you, particularly during the hotter months.

🚗 Getting There: The bay is reached by a descending road from Għajnsielem. Parking is available near the coast, but spaces may become limited during summer weekends.

🌊 Check the Conditions: Although the bay is often calm, sea conditions can change quickly. Avoid swimming or entering the water during rough weather.
