Fungus Rock, known locally as Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral, is one of Gozo’s most iconic natural landmarks, rising dramatically from the sea at the entrance of Dwejra Bay. This massive limestone islet became historically famous during the time of the Knights of St. John, who believed a rare medicinal plant growing on the rock possessed powerful healing properties. The Knights highly valued the plant, known as the “Maltese Fungus,” and guarded the rock so carefully that climbing it without permission was strictly forbidden.

Today, Fungus Rock stands as a symbol of Gozo’s fascinating blend of natural beauty, history, and legend. The surrounding waters are exceptionally clear, making the area popular for diving, snorkeling, photography, and sightseeing. Its dramatic appearance against the blue Mediterranean Sea creates one of the most recognizable coastal scenes in the Maltese Islands.
