Wied il-Mielaħ is located on the wild northern coast of Gozo. Unlike some of the island's softer beaches, this area is defined by sheer vertical limestone cliffs and deep sea valleys. If you are arriving from Malta via the Gozo Channel Ferry Terminal, driving to the arch takes roughly 25 minutes. Follow the signs through the central hub of Victoria toward the village of Għarb.
For those using public transit, there is no direct bus route to the cliff edge. Take Bus 312 from the main terminal near Citadella - Victoria and get off at the "Dbiegi" or "Għarb" stops. From there, you must walk approximately 2.5 kilometers down the paved agricultural road that winds through the valley. Use the Discover Gozo map Bus Planner to plan your route directly.
One of the best ways to experience Wied il-Mielaħ is on foot. A spectacular coastal trail connects the arch to the narrow sea canyon of Wied il-Għasri. This hike takes about 45 minutes to an hour one way, guiding you past traditional Salt Pans carved directly into the flat coastal limestone. Start from Marsalforn, and walk along the coast, Its a long walk so be prepared with enough water and some snacks.
The terrain here is remarkably different from the southern coastline, such as the sheer drops of Sanap Cliffs. Here, the landscape steps down gradually in limestone shelves before plunging into the sea.
Because the arch sits on the northern edge of the island, it is highly exposed to the strong "Majjistral" (Northwest) and "Tramuntana" (North) winds. During a storm, massive swells crash into the canyon and wash over the lower concrete steps. If you see waves breaking near the viewing platform, do not descend the stairs.
Unlike the sheltered waters around Fungus Rock inside Dwejra's circular bay, the sea below Wied il-Mielaħ is deep, open, and has incredibly strong currents. Swimming is not recommended at this site under any circumstances.
Can you walk across the top of the Wied il-Mielaħ arch?
No. Walking across the top of the arch is strictly prohibited and highly dangerous. Natural limestone erosion occurs constantly, and there are no safety barriers.
Is there an admission fee to see the arch?
No, visiting the arch, the valley, and using the viewing staircase is entirely free and open to the public 24/7.
Can I visit Wied il-Mielaħ on a day trip that includes Comino?
It is possible but requires tight scheduling. Because Wied il-Mielaħ is on the northwestern tip of Gozo and boats to Comino depart from the eastern side near Mgarr, you should visit the arch early in the morning before heading to the ferry.
