The Citadel, rising above the capital city of Victoria, is Gozo’s historic fortress and cultural heart. Its origins date back to the Bronze Age, and it was fortified during Phoenician, Roman, and medieval times. The Knights of St. John rebuilt much of the structure in the 16th century after devastating Ottoman raids, turning it into an impregnable stronghold. Within its walls you’ll find narrow streets, traditional houses, museums, and the majestic Cathedral of the Assumption. Today, the Citadel is not only a reminder of Gozo’s turbulent past but also a living monument, offering sweeping views of the island in every direction.

✨ Tourist Tips:

🕰 Visiting Hours: The museums and cathedral have opening times, but the fortress walls are open 24/7 — sunrise and sunset walks are magical.

📜 Tickets: Entry to the Citadel itself is free, but combined tickets are available for the cathedral and museums.

☀️ Prepare for Heat: The limestone walls reflect the sun, so bring water and a hat if visiting midday.

📸 Best Viewpoints: The ramparts offer 360° views of Gozo — perfect for photographers.
