History & Tips
The Ġgantija Temples, located in Xagħra, are among the oldest free-standing structures on Earth, dating back to around 3600–3200 BC — even older than the pyramids of Egypt. Their name comes from the Maltese word ġgant (giant), as locals once believed the massive stones could only have been placed there by giants. The site, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, consists of two megalithic temple complexes built for ritual and community gatherings. Walking through Ġgantija offers a glimpse into the incredible skills and spirituality of Malta’s Neolithic people, making it one of Gozo’s must-see landmarks.
